The Protecting Our Community category, sponsored by Lander and Rogers Lawyers, recognises those championing the human rights and safety of the Victorian LGBTI Community.
Here are the finalists for the Protecting Our Community Award:
VAC & GLLO LGBTI Beat Safety Patrol – a joint effort program between the Victorian AIDS Council and the Victorian Police LGBTI Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officers, tailored to protect beat users within the community from homophobic attacks and violence, while addressing a special need amongst same-sex attracted men.
RMIT University – has worked to create a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQI staff and students for the last two years, with a focus on queer-centric spaces, including a queer lounge, providing education, and supporting students through a Pride Mentoring program.
Dr James Roffee and Dr Andrea Waling – both researchers working through Monash and La Trobe Universities with a focus on harassment and bullying targeted toward LGBTQI students. Their work in this largely ignored field has had a profound impact, leading to the development of training opportunities for a more inclusive staff.
